Established in 2012, PAREMA is a strategic platform fostering energy cooperation between Morocco and Germany. Morocco is recognized for its significant potential in solar and wind energy, with plans to integrate its electricity production into the European market, benefiting both regions. The partnership focuses on renewable power generation, decarbonization, grid expansion, and advancing the Power-to-X market, aiming to strengthen sustainable energy ties and Morocco’s role in the global green energy sector.
Milestones
2012: MoU on Moroccan-German Energy Partnership
Under the double objective of guaranteeing security of energy supply and protecting the environment, the agreement gives priority to cooperation on renewable energies at both public and private levels, notably through the establishment of stable framework conditions for sustainable energy policies, capacity and institution building, and strategies for the successful development and implementation of Morocco's wind and solar energy plans.
2016: Joint Declaration
Morocco and Germany signed an agreement to jointly pursue a sustainable energy future, focused mainly on renewable sources, by 2050. The cooperation prioritises the development of new electricity generation, the expansion and interconnection of power grids, ensuring grid stability, integrating electricity markets, involving economic stakeholders, and enhancing energy efficiency.
2020: Alliance for the development of the Power-to-X sector
Established in 2020, the “German-Moroccan Alliance for the development of the Power-to-X sector” aims to develop green hydrogen production, as well as related research and investment projects. Notably, the alliance includes the creation of a reference green hydrogen plant with an electrolysis capacity of around 100 MW, led by MASEN (Moroccan Agency for Sustainable Energy) with financial support from KfW.
